Chip
Mayer
Tribute
Uncut
------------------------------------------------
Tragically,
On
July
24,
2011,
at
the
age
of
fifty-seven,
Chip
Mayer
(better
known
as
“Vance
Duke”)
died
unexpectedly
in
Sherman
Oaks,
California.
One
of
the
most
compassionate,
spiritual,
witty,
honest
guys
I’ve
ever
known
was
my
best
friend,
George
Charles
“Chip”
Mayer.
He
always
put
others
before
himself.
I’d
like
to
take
you
back
thirty
years,
to
the
day
I
first
met
this
great
guy
lovingly
known
to
most
everyone
as
“Vance
Duke.”
Chip
was
born
in
New
York,
but
the
family
soon
moved
to
Ridgewood,
New
Jersey.
After
college
at
Colgate
University
in
Hamilton,
New
York,
he
began
acting
and
had
instant
success.
His
first
role
was
with
Burt
Reynolds
in
“Stunts
Unlimited.”
Later,
he
was
cast
as
“Vance
Duke”
in
the
Dukes
of
Hazzard.
Chip
played
this
role
for
nearly
two
years.
He
then
was
cast
as
T.J.
Daniels
in
the
daytime
soap
opera
“Santa
Barbara,”
where
he
starred
in
134
episodes.
Chip
was
in
the
movie
“Liar,
Liar”
with
Jim
Carey,
and
starred
in
numerous
other
shows,
movies,
and
commercials.
He
was
a
very
personable,
talented,
and
gifted
actor.
Chip
and
I
first
met
during
casting
for
the
Dukes
of
Hazzard.
In
1979,
“Dukes”
was
a
pilot
and
being
filmed
in
my
hometown
of
Atlanta.
Warner
Brothers
sent
casting
to
Atlanta
looking
for
true
Southern
redneck
boys
to
play
the
parts
of
Bo
and
Luke
Duke.
I
was
originally
called
to
audition
for
the
part
of
“Bo,”
but
was
flying
with
Eastern
Airlines
at
the
time
and
couldn’t
make
the
call.
And
so
it
was
that
John
Schneider
got
the
part.
Several
years
later,
when
John
Schneider
and
Tom
Wopat
left
during
a
contract
dispute,
I
was
asked
for
a
casting
call
with
Daisy
Duke.
Next
to
her
was
Chip
Mayer.
He
walked
right
up
to
me,
put
his
arm
around
me,
and
said,
“Coy,
you
and
me
will
get
this
part.”
I
loved
this
guy
immediately.
So,
after
three
weeks
of
brutal
auditions,
the
producers
asked
me
for
a
meeting.
When
I
got
there,
they
asked
me
with
whom
I
wanted
to
work,
and
of
course,
I
requested
Chip
Mayer.
They
gave
me a
strange
smile
and
said,
“Thank
you.”
I
thought
for
sure
they
were
sending
me
home.
The
next
morning,
the
producers
called
me
into
another
meeting.
I
walked
into
a
meeting
room
at
Warner
Brothers’
that
was
filled
with
champagne
bottles,
and
I
really
liked
what
I
saw!
I
asked
whom
the
bubbly
was
for,
then
a
large
arm
got
me
in a
headlock
- it
was
Chip!
He
said,
“I
told
you
we
would
get
the
parts!”
Our
friendship
continued
to
grow
as
we
worked
on
the
set
over
the
next
season
and
we
were
definitely
the
jokers.
Chip
could
make
a
joke
out
of
everything
that
anyone
said
or
did.
At
the
same
time,
he
was
so
positive
and
he
would
say
the
most
profound
things.
Later,
as
his
relationship
with
the
Lord
grew,
he
would
quote
Bible
verses
that
were
always
relevant
to
the
situation
at
hand.
Chip
was
a
great,
fun-loving
guy
who
loved
life
and
people.
He
would
give
his
last
dollar
to a
beggar
on
the
street.
In
the
last
several
years,
anytime
you
told
him
something
he
would
say,
“Praise
Jesus.”
He
had
tattooed
on
his
back
in
large
letters
“Job
23:10.”
(EDIT:
"But
he
knows
the
way
that
I
take;
when
he
has
tested
me,
I
will
come
forth
as
gold")
I
didn’t
fully
understand
why
until
now.
(EDIT:
Chip
struggled
with
certain
demons
all
his
life
and
was
constantly
trying
to
learn
life
lessons
from
his
battles.
He
was
always
open
and
honest
about
the
struggles
he
faced)
and
he
instilled
life
lessons
to
all
who
came
his
way.
His
fiancée,
Catherine,
said,
if
they
were
shopping
and
he
heard
a
baby’s
voice,
he
would
stop
and
go
over
to
the
family
and
bless
the
baby!
He
told
me
after
his
role
in
“Liar,
Liar”
that
he
began
refusing
work
that
wasn’t
praising
God.
So,
he
worked
less
in
the
film
industry
and
began
working
in
the
construction
industry.
When
my
first
son,
Byron
“B”
Cherry,
Jr.,
died
tragically
in a
car
accident
at
twenty-years-old,
the
first
person
I
called
was
Chip.
I
knew
he
could
get
me
through
this
with
his
words
of
encouragement
and
his
understanding
of
the
Lord.
He
saved
my
life
during
that
tragic
time.
Chip
was
bigger
than
life
and
affected
everyone
with
whom
he
came
in
contact,
and
he
was
my
dear
friend,
counselor,
and
brother.
We’d
recently
reconnected
and
appeared
at
the
Johnny
Cash
Music
Festival
this
past
June
- it
was
like
old
times.
He
was
there
with
his
fiancée
and
the
two
of
them
were
so
in
love,
dancing
to
the
music,
hugging
and
kissing.
I
was
looking
forward
to
seeing
and
making
more
appearances
with
my
old
friend
Chip.
Unfortunately,
I’ll
not
get
that
opportunity
now,
as
Heaven
had
other
plans.
Chip
has
four
beautiful
daughters,
Ashley
Noelle,
Alexandria
Noelle,
Angelica
Arielle,
Anastasia,
and
two
grandchildren,
Chad
and
Dillon.
Later
on
as
CoyDuke.com
grows,
Markus
will
be
adding
a
special
Tribute
page
to
Chris
on
the
site.
So
stay
tuned.
